Candied Walnuts

My daughter sent me this bag of Candied Sour Cream Walnuts, (made by C.J. Olson Cherries of Sunnyvale, Ca.) and it reminded me of Christmas long ago.

Sure enough, i got out my old wooden recipe box that holds 3 generations of family recipies and found this one for candied walnuts. there's no telling where the original picture and recipe came from, but it looks like something from the 1940's to me.

here's the directions:

1. Just get out the Walnut Bowl and crack enough Walnuts to fill two cups.

Then make a syrup of 1 1/2 C. of granulated sugar, 1/4 C. of honey, and 1/2 C. of water.

2. boil until the syrup forms a soft ball in cold water. (234 - 240 degrees).
remove from the fire and add 1/2 tsp of vanilla.( for variety, add any flavorless coloring material.)

3. Stir in the Walnut kernels until the syrup becomes thick and creamy.
turn onto wax paper, separate with a fork and allow to cool.

4. Now we're asking you--isn't that easy? And what a treat! they'll bring three cheers from the family--and a home-packed box makes an ideal Christmas gift.
